Basti: Different Types
There are two types of Basti Kriyas: Jala Basti and Sthala Basti.
Jala Basti: This method involves cleansing the colon using water. Water is introduced into the large intestine through the anus to promote detoxification and alleviate various medical conditions.
Sthala Basti: This is also called Sushka Basti. This type of Basti Kriya involves drawing air into the colon without the use of any equipment. This is done by forcefully inhaling while contracting the abdominal muscles, which helps to cleanse the intestinal tract.
Jala Basti: Procedure
Once the practitioner learns to control the abdominal walls and properly involve the sphincter muscles for the practice, Jala Basti can be performed.
Procedure
Posture is important while performing Jala Basti. The practitioner can either sit or squat near the water source, such as a tub or a river. Assume Utkatasana and make sure the water reaches the navel.
The water should be introduced to the colon by sucking through the anus. Try to expand the anal sphincter muscles for Uddiyana Bandha. This will cause a suction to allow water to flow inside. Retention of water is important. Come to a standing position and try to hold the water inside. The practice of Nauli is suggested for proper expulsion of the water.
After holding the water for 3 to 5 minutes, breathe out and simultaneously release the water through the anus. The process is to be repeated for the complete elimination of the feces and other waste matter from the bowel. The practice of Mayurasana is suggested for smooth waste removal.
Jala Basti is comparable to enemas, but the procedures have significant differences. Enemas involve inserting a tube into the anus and using gravity to introduce water into the large intestine. The waste matter is then expelled along with the water. In contrast, Jala Basti draws water into the intestines against gravity and holds it there for a period of time. Then it is forcefully expelled through Nauli. This cleans the intestinal tract and colon. A lubricated tube is suggested for beginners while performing Jala Basti.
Sthala Basti: Procedure
Sthala Basti is a much simpler process. Let’s examine the procedure:
Procedure
After lying down in Vipareeta Karan, bring the knees towards the chest and engage in Uddiyana Bandha. Simultaneously, perform Ashwini Mudra to draw air into the colon. Hold this air for a few minutes before releasing it through the anus. Repeat this three to five times.
Remember to inhale while contracting the anus and sphincter muscles. And also exhale, expanding the anus and chest and pulling the diaphragm in the upward direction. This creates a vacuum for easier air suction.
